1.Definition and Function of Fairlead
Fairlead is the key equipment in the ship's mooring system, mainly used to guide the direction of the rope (such as anchor chain, steel rope or synthetic fiber ship) during the ship's berthing, mooring or towing operation, to ensure that the cable slides smoothly under stress, and to avoid rope breakage or equipment damage due to friction, distortion or sudden impact.
Its core functions include:
Orientation : constrains the motion trajectory of the cable to reduce friction with the hull structure.
Distributed stress : The cable stress is distributed to the hull structure through reasonable design to improve safety.
Equipment protection : Prevent the rope from shortening its service life due to excessive wear or sharp edge cutting.
2. Structure and Material
A winch fairlead usually consists of the following components:
Guide wheel/Roller : Rotating parts to reduce rope sliding resistance (some types have no roller).
Bracket/Base: High strength metal structure, fixed to the deck or side of the ship.
Protective liner: nylon or rubber material to cushion friction and reduce noise.
3.Commonly Used Materials
Cast steel/carbon steel: Economical and durable, suitable for most merchant ships, requiring anti-corrosion coating.
Stainless steel: Strong corrosion resistance, common in ocean engineering ships or high salt spray environment.
Nylon/polymer material: lightweight and no spark risk, suitable for oil tankers or chemical tankers.
In practical application, detailed calculation and selection should be carried out in combination with ship design drawings and classification society specifications. This paper is only for technical reference.
