In addition to the core anti-torsion function, the swivel group also integrates other key functions:
1. Enhance connection strength:
The ring assembly itself is an extremely sturdy forged steel component, and its Breaking Strength is designed to match or even be higher than the grade of the anchor chain it is connected to.
It replaces the ordinary chain links and shackles, becoming the core connection point between the anchor and the chain, ensuring that the weakest link of the entire mooring system is not at this critical position.
2. Improve wear resistance:
This connection point is often dragged on the seabed and rubs against sand, stones and rocks.
The ring group is usually designed to be thicker and smoother than ordinary chain links, featuring better wear resistance and thus extending the service life of the equipment.
3. Convenient maintenance and inspection :
The rotary ring assembly is a standardized detachable component. By inspecting its wear and rotational flexibility, it is convenient to assess the status of the key components of the entire mooring system and replace them when necessary, without having to replace the entire anchor chain or anchor.
Summary
In simple terms, adding a swivel group between the anchor chain and the anchor is like adding a swivel in the middle of a very long rope. Its core function is:
Allow the upper anchor chain to rotate freely with the hull, while protecting the lower anchor and anchor chain from torsional force damage, thereby preventing the anchor chain from twisting, maintaining the anchor's grip, and ensuring the safety and durability of the entire mooring system.
This is a seemingly simple but crucial safety device, an indispensable part of modern ship mooring systems.
Important Note : Although the swivel can rotate, it cannot replace the correct operation during anchoring. When lifting the anchor, the crew still need to pay attention to observing the condition of the anchor chain to ensure that it is not overly twisted.
