The IWRC Structure of the Steel Wire Rope - Part 1

2025-12-12

IWRC is the abbreviation of "Independent Wire Rope Core", and in Chinese it is usually referred to as "Independent Steel Wire Rope Core" or "Metal Rope Core".

Core concept

In the structure of the steel wire rope, the "core" is the central component, and the outer steel wire strands are wound around it. The main function of the core is:

1. Support the outer layers of the structure, ensuring their correct positioning and spacing in the cross-section.

2. Provide internal support to enhance the resistance of the steel wire ropes to compression and radial deformation.

3. Contribute a portion of the tensile strength.

IWRC is one of the three main types of steel wire rope cores. The other two types are:

·Fiber core: Usually made of natural fibers (such as sisal) or synthetic fibers (such as polypropylene). Marked as FC.

·Steel wire strand core: Composed of one strand of steel wire, similar to the outer strand structure but possibly slightly smaller. Marked as WSC.

The detailed structure of IWRC

Just as its name suggests, "Independent Steel Wire Core" is itself an independent and small-sized steel wire rope.

·It is made by twisting multiple steel wires into one or more strands, and then these strands are wound around a central core to form a complete, small-sized steel wire rope.

·This small steel wire rope is independently manufactured and then used as the core of the main steel wire rope.

·The outer main steel wire rope strands (usually 6 or 8 strands) are wound around this IWRC.
